100 DAYS AGO TODAY CHRISTY'S CREW WAS CREATED.
It is hard to believe that it has already been 100 days. Most of you know the story, but Christy's Crew was created on August 2nd, 2007 after my dear friend Christy was diagnosed with breast cancer. During those first few days I went wig shopping with Christy, I went to her chemo, and I was scared for my friend. I didn't know what the next days and weeks would bring.
How would she react to the chemo? Would the shock and sadness of the diagnosis lessen? It came clear to me that day when I took Christy to her second chemo treatment that things would be different with her. I remember being in the car on the way to breakfast when Christy broke the news that her hair was starting to fall out. I cried. Christy quickly told me not to be sad, that losing her hair was only a sign the chemo was working. From that point on, I knew Christy was special.
Christy isn't your normal cancer patient. She smiles, she is energetic, she accepts her getting breast cancer as a sign that the disease just needed her as another voice.
Sure, I started Christy's Crew 100 days ago, but it would NEVER, EVER be what it is without her and her amazing attitude. Instead of tears, we laugh. Instead of hiding behind the disease, Christy opts to share her inspirational story with others.
When I look back at the last 100 days, I really can't even think about all of it without getting emotional. Tuesday, Christy will have her LAST chemo treatment before she moves on to the next stage of her journey. The friends and family of Christy's Crew have responded to our cause just like Christy has responded to her chemo. Amazingly.
In the last 100 days we hosted the biggest fundraiser in the last 2 years for the entire Uno's Corporation, we have meet breast cancer survivors, we have been a support group for those battling the disease, we hosted our first golf tournament and a TON of other fundraisers, we have seen kids get involved in the fundraising efforts and become some of our largest contributors, we have grown from 2 members to 15, we have witnessed story after story of complete strangers doing good things, we have read articles on Christy's Crew in three different newspapers and watched the "Bright Spot" story on Channel 13, we have made new friends, we have laughed and learned all at the same time.
I know I can speak for everyone on the crew when I say that ALL of us are better people because of Christy and what we have done over the last 100 days. Our experiences have been life changing, and I will be forever grateful to Christy for being so open about her journey. Christy's attitude is charismatic. She makes what we have done over the last 100 days easy.
100 days ago we had a vision. Today, we celebrate our success.
I am so proud to say that over the last 100 days with the help of friends, families, corporations, and many complete strangers, Christy's Crew has raised over $16,000.00 for breast cancer!
With Christy as our inspiration, we will make a difference!
Congratulations Christy on your last chemo treatment...you are amazing!
Happy 100 Day Anniversary to Christy's Crew!
Without the love, support, and donations from all of you who have supported Christy's Crew over the last 100 days we couldn't celebrate our success. Here is to many more days of success, laughter, fundraising, and friendship!
Go CREW!
